atlantic jersey new porsche

Okay. So, here goes nothing...

I created this journal a while ago now, with the brilliant idea to start writing regularly, etc. But of course, as often happens with brilliant ideas, not much came of it. Until now that is. Tonight seemed like a great time to loose my live journal virginity, so thatapos;s what Iapos;m doing right now :)

What I should be doing right now, is making a presentation on Edmund Burke. But I just discovered that heapos;s very, very, boring and entirely to complicated, and since I have a hell of a cold, and my mind feels slightly toasted at the moment, I donapos;t really (more like really donapos;t) feel like doing anything.

I could go and ramble on and on now, but since I should be making that presentation, and Iapos;ve been procrastinating since after dinner, Iapos;m going for the wiser choice of actually opening Microsoft PowerPoint and starting to do something...:)

I left about 8:30 AMEST and then arrived in San Jose yesterday about 1:30 PMPST. Iam out here for some training (a new DNS/DHCPsolution for those interested, but most people outside IT, just glaze over when Italk about my job.)

We got our rental (a Buick Lucerne which is amazing smooth and quiet) and checked in at our "hotel" -- which is really a motel, but is in fact, very nice, with a widescreen HDTV and a very comfortable king sized bed. We immediately headed into San Francisco, about 40 minutes away.

We were starving, since the 6 hour flight from Chicago has no meal service, just some peanuts, and rushed to a great dinner at the Franciscan, right down on Embarcadero with a great view of the Bay. Ihad crab chowder in a sourdough breadbowl, sauteed asparagus, and some garlicky shrimp. We were worried about time, but this turned out to be misplaced, as the service was quite speedy.

We then walked to where the ferry for our night tour of Alcatraz would depart, and boarded.

The tour of Alcatraz was really something. It is a truly unique place, and would recommend to anyone to visit if they were in the area. And the view of Bay Area from Alcatraz is quite impressive. There is an audio tour of the cellhouse and some other presentations on Capone, Escapes, and a few other topics.

We got back to the hotel about 10 local time, at which time Icompletely crashed, after an eventful, yet tiring, 23 hour day.

boxing world champ

I started out in February this year--lots of appointments, tests and more tests. I found problems I wasnapos;t aware of. I had about 20 polyps removed from my stomach. I had to swallow a camera to see if my intestines had any polyps (None). Sleep tests, psych the whole routine. Now insurance is approved and my date is November 17 in Dallas by Dr. Michael Green. I apos;m having lap RNY. Finally. I started out at 282 pounds and am down to 252 now. So I have made progress before hand to make surgery easier. Just one month to go. Yeah

I did not watch the debate last night; I donapos;t watch debates, they threaten my embarrassment squick. But I like to read about them the next day to find out who said what etc.

The media headlines today all seem to be along the lines of "McCain puts Obama on the defensive;" "McCain comes out of the gate strong;" "McCain turns up the heat on Obama." They all seem to think McCain did pretty well last night. I know that people with whom I agree about this stuff (i.e. Obama = good, McCain = AIEEEE NOOOOO) probably think McCain did terribly, but Iapos;m not concerned about you all (*heart*); Iapos;m concerned with the undecided voters out there who might be thinking the same as the media, that McCain did well and showed his worth. BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE REALLY REALLY BAD. :(

God, I just want this election to be OVER and Obama comfortably ensconced in the White House PLEASE so that I can stop worrying about it. *hibernates until election day*

Pumpkins: I am really looking forward to pumpkin carving this year. Last year we didnapos;t carve any pumpkins, hardly marked the holiday at all but for E going trick or treating. This year I feel like going all out and turning my porch into something creepy and fun or something.

Thereapos;s a house in town that has a teeny little postage-stamp-sized front yard, but every year they come up with the coolest stuff -- they make a mini walk-through haunted yard, with coffins and mummies and zombies and creepy noises and real people buried and reaching out of the ground and a little shack with a werewolf in it and whatnot. They always have hordes of people at their house all night because itapos;s super fun. Iapos;m not plotting anything like that, but I do feel like doing something more than the usual. Nothing I have to go buy, but I could probably come up with something with what Iapos;ve got.

Tuesday was a fantastic day- I FINALLY passed Freestyle 3 I was pity passed by Burton before Andy even started teaching the group lessons (maybe December? I think it might have even been before then, but I canapos;t find the date) Either way, I didnapos;t have a backspin with a crossed foot, and my inside 3s only worked sometimes. Now my inside 3s always work when thatapos;s all Iapos;m doing (on the silver move pattern is another story) and I can cross my backspin MOST of the time- during our test I crossed it on 5 backspins in a row, and got 3-5 revolutions on all but one of them. So I can now be stuck in Freestyle 4 for the rest of my life- since it has a loop in it :(

Andy tested us, since I think heapos;s getting pretty tired of Freestyle 3 things- even though we donapos;t generally only work on level elements. So two of us are in Freestyle 4, and two are in Freestyle 3. (Except the other girl in FS 4 with me has an axel and a double sal, but she hasnapos;t done all the moves elements.)

After we did the test, we worked on sit spins. I did some- until my knee started hurting, but apparently thatapos;s not a good indicator of when I need to stop, because the next day, they hurt really badly. Anyhow- none were good, I ended up on my butt after every one of them, but thatapos;s an improvement over my "what do you mean Iapos;m not sitting" spin, where Iapos;m not even close enough to the ice to fall. Andy is having me support my weight by putting my hand on my knee, which does make it easier to sit, but seems to mess with my balance a bit. I really want to get this, but I also donapos;t want to wreck my knees. After my knees were done I worked on backspins, and was able to get a good enough position that I started working on the exit- I can either get the "down" or the "kick" but not "down and kick", so Iapos;m still stuck in a backspin with no exit edge. Iapos;m still super happy though because the backspins were fantastic.

After the lesson I put my pads on and worked on jumps. The novice level skater who occasionally skates at our rink, was practicing, so didnapos;t I feel silly wearing pads for waltz jumps while he was working on triples, but itapos;s the only way Iapos;m going to get these jumps to move (And he was the one who first suggested I wear pads.) Anyhow- I really feel like the waltz jumps are going further across the ice. Maybe they actually arenapos;t, but they feel better. The young girl I always skate with suggested I "stop putting my foot down to land so soon". Iapos;ll work on that :) My salchows didnapos;t go well though. I tried a few flips, and I think I need more height on the half flip, because I canapos;t get the full rotation. Then I did some half lutzes, and while Iapos;m sure they donapos;t really leave the ice either- they FEEL the highest.

Now the bad news- although skating was fine, when I took my boots off I was in so much pain I could barely walk. I had done something to my achilles tendon (pull? strain? whatapos;s the right word) and it hurt so badly that I didnapos;t sleep almost at all Tuesday night, because I kept waking myself up. Today (thursday) it still hurts walking downstairs, and a bit while Iapos;m walking, but Iapos;m going to try to skate. I canapos;t figure out what would have caused this, except that I switched my ankle pads. I lost a pad last wednesday, and got Bunga pads instead of Silipos (that I previously had) as a replacement because lots of people say they are better, and Jenskates had them for the cheapest padding price. Well they are a little bit thicker, and I think that messed up the feel of the boots. When I took the pads off I had bruises around the edges of the pads, plus this achilles tendon problem. Itapos;s the only thing I can think that was different.

So Wednesday I went to synchro off ice, and walked through the program (even though THAT hurt too, I tried not to twist on the foot to make it worse). We learned a bit of easy new footwork to add to the circle, so I could have picked that up next week, but practice is so much better when everyone is there. Then I watched the first 30 minutes of on ice, while they worked on a traveling straightline pinwheel, I tried to listen to what the coach was saying about how to travel, and caught some of it from the sides of the rink Iapos;m glad I didnapos;t skate because my tendon still hurts today, but I hate paying for ice time I donapos;t use. I need to decide soon whether or not I should cancel my lesson tonight.

I made a new dress this weekend- a mock up of our synchro outfit for this year. Iapos;m still having trouble with bunching at the waist, but overall itapos;s a pretty dress. I need to hem the sleeves (they are about 6 inches too long) and add the snaps. Then Iapos;ll post pictures. Making dresses is fun
